On Oct 7th, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) held a Council meeting to evaluate the research project “Developing a pepper production model in Chau Duc district, Ba Ria Vung Tau province which applies GlobalGAP standard and has link from production to consumption”. The project was led by Dr. Bui Xuan Khoi and hosted by the Southeast Fruit Research Center. Mr. Vuong Quang Can, deputy director of DOST chaired the evaluation Council.
The objective of the project was to enhance productivity and product quality to maintain stable output and increase competitiveness, contributing to improve farmers’ income. The project applied the production model with the adoption of GlobalGAP standard in 8 pepper farms with a total area of 8ha.
The evaluation Council conducted field survey of pepper farms in Quang Thanh commune (Chau Duc district). It was found that in pepper farms which adopted the GlobalGAP production model, growing rate was higher, deadly disease infection rate was lower while productivity increased by 18,8 – 52,21% comparing to control cases and increased by 15,94 – 28,23% comparing to the crop before application. Analysis shows that economic efficiency was 47,82% higher than control cases and 29,13% higher than normal methods. Currently, all the 8 pepper farms signed contracts with Ngo Gia Co. Ltd.
Adopting GlobalGAP standard is a sustainable production trend as it helps ensuring quality assurance, food safety, worker safety and environmental preservation and boosts consumer’s confidence.
According to the evaluation Council, the model is suitable to apply to farmers in the province because of its cost advantages. At the same time, it is relevant to meets with local climate conditions and consumers’ demand for argricultural hygiene products. The research project was graded as good and accepted as completed by the evaluation Council.
